Recep Tayyip Erdoğan foi reeleito presidente na segunda volta das eleições, tendo vencido Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu por 4%. Até à primeira volta das eleições, a 14 de Maio, vários analistas acreditavam que o líder da oposição poderia vencer representando uma oposição unida contra o líder incumbente. O AKP de Erdoğan governa o país há mais de duas décadas, mas os recentes terramotos, a situação económica do país e o voto do eleitorado curdo eram vistos como fatores que poderiam influenciar uma mudança no xadrez político turco.
