Aquele que tem sido descrito até hoje como o processo mais transparente para a eleição do novo Secretário Geral das Nações Unidas, deu a conhecer esta 5ª feira, 6 de Outubro, por votação formal, o candidato recomendado de forma unânime pelo Conselho de Segurança para liderar a organização. António Guterres assumirá o cargo como 9º Secretário Geral a 1 de Janeiro de 2017, após aprovação, à porta fechada e por maioria simples, da Assembleia Geral.
