I Latin Polar Science Workshop

Lisbon will host the First Latin Polar Science Workshop on October 1–2, 2025, an international event that will bring together experts from Portugal, Brazil, Spain, and Argentina to discuss the major challenges of research in the polar regions. The event will take place at the National Defence Institute and aims to establish itself as a key platform for scientific exchange and strategic debate on the Arctic and Antarctic.
Over two days, academics, researchers, and representatives from international institutions will address issues of growing global importance. Topics include scientific cooperation in Antarctica, security in the Atlantic and the Arctic, the challenges of fieldwork in extreme environments, and the connections between oceans, poles, and outer space. The program reflects the broad spectrum of challenges linked to these critical global regions, whose relevance is increasingly recognized due to their influence on climate and environmental stability.
The workshop will feature renowned participants such as Rear Admiral Nuno de Noronha Bragança, Director of the Atlantic Centre; glaciologist Jefferson Simões of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul; and Commander Baptista Pereira of the Portuguese Navy. They will be joined by researchers from leading universities and institutes across Europe and Latin America, reinforcing the initiative's transnational and collaborative character.
The event will conclude with a poster session and the Polar Coffee, designed to foster networking and synergies among participants.
With this inaugural edition, the National Defence Institute strengthens its role as a promoter of debate on the polar regions, underlining their importance not only in the scientific sphere, but also in the geopolitical, environmental, and international security dimensions that shape our common future.
