In a context of growing social complexity, marked by rapid technological transformations, political polarization, and structural inequalities—whose effects extend from local to transnational communities—the Óbidos Seminars 2025 aim to critically explore three central axes of contemporary democratic life: Democracy, Disinformation, and Inequality.
Digital transformations, set against a global environment characterized by geopolitical tensions and transnational information flows, have profoundly reshaped the public sphere. The multiplication of digital platforms, the fragmentation of spaces for debate, and the accelerated circulation of content challenge classical models of rational deliberation and informed consensus.
This environment invites reflection on the conceptualization of democracy as a regime defined by a continuous process of inclusion and political participation. At the same time, political systems in Europe and North America are facing growing challenges, including the erosion of trust in institutions, the devaluation of scientific knowledge, and the emergence of alternative forms of legitimacy and authority.
The Óbidos Seminars 2025 programme will be structured in thematic sessions bringing together scholars from different scientific fields, with the aim of critically and reflectively addressing these phenomena. The purpose is to foster a comprehensive understanding of contemporary social realities and contribute to more inclusive, democratic, and participatory research and intervention practices.
