"When the world is changing, it is precisely when we find it most difficult to understand. And it is simultaneously when we have the greatest need to understand it. In this regard, allow me a word of appreciation for initiatives such as this one, or for the work of the National Institute of Defense and the Diplomatic Institute, or even the process of bringing together our analysts at the Portuguese Institute of International Relations, and others, to say that our analytical capacity today is undoubtedly much superior to what we had a decade ago."
João Gomes Cravinho, Minister of Foreign Affairs, in "A Diplomacia e a Independência de Portugal"

"This project seeks to find out if we, the Portuguese, have the means to keep our sovereignty viable, albeit shared, in the new European and global context. Naturally, we cannot aspire to have definitive answers to this and other questions. What we will be able to do is to reflect on the best path within our reach and within our resources to ensure the political survival of Portugal."
João Rosa Lã, book co-organizer and co-author
